Giving opinions - Intermediate 1

Cooking, for most people, is a tedious job that they have to do everyday, whether they like it or not. Even if you are not going to eat yourself, you still have to cook for your family.
However, there are some people who really enjoy it. So, can cooking become a hobby?

I would like to know if you think that the following statement is true/false:

"Men cook as a hobby, women cook because they have to"

Hi María,
Are you kidding me? In my family there are people with restaurants, and when I had visited them; I have always seen women cooking, however men always are waiters. Several times if the woman was ill the restaurant would be closed.
In my opinion, men cook because of they work in restaurant as cook, may be some of them cook as hobby; I don’t really know it, but generally women cook because they are to have it and our mothers teach us to do it, in spite of currently many men help women to do shopping, cooking, and both share many things of the houses. And in the case the oldest men, I’m sure they never help in their houses, for example my father.

Hi María:

I agree with the title. Women cook everyday: children, lunchs, school, jobs, family...and women are tired. Where is the creative? Women can't but women try it everyday. Men are different. On sundays in the morning, they said: I'll make a special meal for us...Oh! That is wonderful! He has relax, creative...and after that, no wonder, children say... "Dad cooks better than mum" but men must cook everyday. Cooking is a hard work if you make it everyday.

I agree with Charo. When I think about oldest people, I don’t know men that cooks at home everyday. All elderly men are retired, and they are doing nothing but… what about elderly women?

In some reports, women spend on homework about three times more than men. Men maybe helps women, but they don’t take responsibility for cooking.

Even if they both work, women usually have to cook.

Is this a pessimist opinion?

I don’t think so. From an historical point of view men more and more cooks at home not like a hobby but because they have to. Now with a lot of jobless men, they do the housework. And one of this is cooking.

More than this, some women are lucky because their husband loves cooking. So, they don’t have to do anything at the kitchen.

Of course……quite a lot of men are lucky.

Hi Maria
I think now, in each family, men and women share the household works, including cooking, regardless of sex. Cooking who have more time or like it.
I like to cook but do not have time. For my husband and me, cooking is a hobby. We love to invite friends home and cook different dishes.

Hi Maria,
I don´t like cooking but in my house I cook every weekend because from Monday to Friday I have lunch at work.
My husband don´t like cooking but he don´t cook because I do all of the cooking.
It is a good example that men cooking if enjoy it and women cooking for eating other thinks that sandwiches.

Hello María:
I think the men cook as a hobby or when they are owners restaurants or waiters while the women have cook every day, although she doesn't like it. However I think the things are changing there are men really like cooking, other important thing in my opinion is when they have to cleaning the cooker, then they disappear

Hello Charo!
Thank you for answering. Let me make some corrections:
-“ Are you kidding me?” is a very informal comment that you would use if you disagreed with the statement. I think you partly agree with the original statement.
-“ people with restaurants”: people who own restaurants.
-“ when I had visited them; I have always seen women”. Here you would have to use present perfect all the time: when I have visited them…
- I think you mean: if the woman was ill the restaurant was closed.
-“ women cook because they are to have it” I think you mean: “women cook because they have to”
_” in spite of currently many men help women” However, many men help women nowadays.

Do you think they help women or they share the chores?

Good contribution! Keep practising!

Hi there, Jose!

Let me give you a few tips:
-“Women cook everyday: children, lunchs, school, jobs, family” You should explain this idea: Women cook their children and family lunches every day: They also do it at school, at work… and they are tired.
-“ Where is the creative?” I think you should say: “Where is creativity?”
- Try to explain this idea too: “Women can't but women try it everyday”
_” On sundays in the morning” = “On Sunday morning”
- I think you mean: He feels relaxed and creative.

- Great expression!: “No wonder why children say” 

I completely agree with you. I think cooking is hard work if you do it every day.
Keep practising!

Hi Javier!

Thank you for sharing! Here you can find some corrections:
- “. When I think about oldest people” I think you mean: When I think about the oldest generations…
- Remember that “men” is not a 3rd person but a plural!!! Attention to that!
- “All elderly men are retired, and they are doing” In this case you should use Present Simple because you are describing routines. Elderly men are retired but they don’t do anything.
- Attention not to confuse homework and housework! Cleaning, cooking, vacuuming… are housework.
- Men don’t cook as a hobby (not like a hobby).
- Women don’t have to do anything in the kitchen. Probably the dishes, don’t you think?

Keep the good work!

Hello Adela!

-You should talk about “household work activities” because work is an uncountable word.
-Instead of “regardless of sex” try to use: regardless the gender.
-You should explain this sentence: “Cooking who have more time or like it”: (e.g.) the person who cooks is the one who has more free time or enjoys it.

Good job!!!

Hello Paqui!
A couple of corrections:
-Remember to use 3rd person correctly! “My husband doesn’t like cooking so he doesn´t cook”. It’s an important mistake!
-You should explain the last sentence. I don’t really understand what you mean…
Keep practising!

Hi there, Lola!

-Remember that you never use the article when you are speaking in general: “the men cook as a hobby”. Men cook as a hobby.
- “the women have cook every day, although she doesn't like it” I think you mean: “women have to cook every day even if they don’t like it”
- Attention to punctuation too. Have a look: However, I think things are changing. There are men who really like cooking. Another important thing, in my opinion, is that when they have to clean the cooker, they disappear!

I totally agree with you, Lola! ;-)
